End of an era

The practice of hiring an Indian wedding band Baja (Baja roughly translates to a musical instrument) for marriages started in the 19th century. This trend took hold as Indians were influenced by British traditions in all walks of life. Sadly, nowadays the practice of hiring wedding bands is no longer in the tradition or trend. The advent of professional DJs (disc jockeys) changed the preferences when it comes to music and rituals have resulted in a steep decline in the viability of this traditional Indian band. Their next generation of wedding band professionals does not want to come into this profession, now all about fighting with time. (Dum Dum, West Bengal; India on February 26, 2020)
